(Iraq) — [JNS.org] At least 210 people were killed and more than 1,700 were injured Sunday night when a powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck in Iran and Iraq. Tremors were felt throughout the Middle East, including in Israel. (Photo Credit: Tasnim News Agency via Wikimedia Commons)
The earthquake hit 19 miles from the eastern Iraqi city of Halabja along a 930-mile fault line that runs between the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Iranian officials anticipate that the death toll will rise as emergency teams rush to rescue dozens of people who remain trapped beneath rubble in damaged areas.
The most extensive damage in Iraq occurred in the town of Darbandikhan in the country’s Kurdish region.
Iran’s western Kermanshah province experienced the worst damage in that country.
